Opium/Scabbies
Gilshad Akbarov, 27, peels the gauze off of an infected sore caused by injecting opium up to ten times daily Friday Oct. 24, 1997. Akbarov, who was a student before succumbing to his addiction, spends all of his time laying in a cockroach infested apartment on a filthy bed in central Osh, unable to work up the energy to adventure outside or kick his habit. His parents supply him with opium although they can tell its destroying his body. An huge infected sore on his left buttock has made it impossible for him to walk without the aid of crutches.
