Began working for UPI in 1984 at age 17 in Madrid as a sports stringer.Later moved to Reuters when they bought UPI. Made staff in 1987 and moved to Mexico City for Reuters as Chief Photographer Mexico and Central America. Remained there for 2 years. Was captured with numerous other journalists in southern Iraq after the Gulf War and held for 5 days. Then onto AP in Cairo where he was based for 4 years covering the Middle East, Bosnia and assorted adventures in Africa.

In July 1995 he was wounded in the leg by mortar shrapnel in Sarajevo and subsequently operated on in Sarajevo. Evacuated by UN troops to Spain he spent 2 months recovering and was back at work in Bosnia 3 months after that. Since September, 1995 he has been AP Chief Photographer for Spain and Portugal.

Most recently he has worked abroad in Afghanistan and Albania. He was awarded the 1997 Bayeux Prize for War Photography for a series from Afghanistan and the 1997 Godo Photojournalism Prize for one picture from that series - a little girl peering through a row of Burqa-clad women. The Godo prize is awarded by the publishers of La Vanguardia newspaper in Barcelona, Spain.

Philosophy: After having visited more than 50 countries over the last 10 years and covered numerous conflicts and unrest around the world, the philosophy is simple: "Get to the centre of the conflict, make the images, get out - hopefully in one piece. Experience, calculated risk-taking and following your instincts will usually keep you in one piece. Recognising and capturing the best images quickly will minimise the risks. Like Big Dave says "always wear a flak jacket"."SL.
